Georgian College of Applied Arts & Technology – Building F Expansion

Georgian College is expanding its Centre for Skilled Trades at the Barrie Campus.

Matheson is helping modernize the original building - upgrading the 16,189 sq ft. of existing space and adding 32,290 sq ft. of new space to the three-storey wing.

The upgraded facility will support training in robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced digital technologies, and will feature new machining and HVAC labs, as well as renovated carpentry labs, which will support hands-on learning. The modernization of advanced technical labs requires precise coordination of mechanical and electrical systems, specialized equipment installation, and adherence to strict safety and operational standards. The removal and replacement of mechanical and electrical systems will be housed in a newly constructed mezzanines.

The building also incorporates sustainable design elements, including triple glazing with shading fins to reduce solar heat gain, a high-efficiency HVAC system with an outdoor air-source heat pump, and a naturalized bioswale for stormwater management.

A suspended pedestrian bridge links the building with the rest of the campus, connecting via a new east-west corridor to a large parking lot at the rear. The bridge frames the Alumni Courtyard at the heart of the campus. Other civil work includes the installation of a new septic system, water supply, and electrical service to support future growth.

The existing academic building will remain operational throughout the construction period.

The design brings Skilled Trades programs into view, with interior windows into shop spaces that expose students to hands-on activities, promoting awareness and informal engagement. Connectivity is another key feature, with a glass-enclosed staircase linking floors and a pedestrian bridge connecting to the rest of campus. We can’t wait to show you more!
