Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik (Sagamok) School
Project Details
Client: Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation
Location: Sagamok, Ontario
Building Type: Education
Size: 30,000 square feet
The new construction of school on a greenfield site within First Nation land in Sagamok, Ontario, was built to accommodate the growing Sagamok Anishnawbek community. The original 18,000 square foot Biidaaban School was built in 1985, and no longer served the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation community needs.
The facility includes spaces for occupational and physical therapy, allowing high-needs and at-risk students to receive services within the community. The school features a Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) load-bearing structure with a wing-style layout and a centralized circular gym and cafeteria. The CLT sits on cast-in-place concrete foundations and raft slabs, with a roof system combining trusses, structural steel, and open web steel joists. The building envelope integrates architectural block masonry, glass fiber reinforced concrete panels, prefinished standing seam metal roofing, and a two-ply composite modified bitumen roof. Interior finishes highlight exposed CLT and colorful accent walls, reflecting a natural aesthetic.
