Toronto Birth Centre

Project Details

Client: Toronto Birth Centre Inc.
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Building Type: Institutional
Contract: Construction Management

This was a 15,000 SF multi-level birthing Centre project for the Ministry of Health. Renovations included new mechanical and electrical systems, wall partitions, specialty items unique to tenant (i.e. birthing tubs), large environment inspired interior graphics, entrance reconfiguring with various specialty décor requirements and a turn-key deployment of computer, phone and network systems.

The TBC has three fully functioning birth rooms plus a convertible assessment room that can function as a 4th birth room for surge capacity. Supporting the clinical program there is family waiting areas, a non-commercial family kitchen, cultural and ceremony space, charting and meeting areas, sleep quarters, storage and utility areas, assessment and exam rooms, reception and waiting areas, a classroom and student resource room, community/gathering space, and administrative space.

The centre is licensed under the Independent Health Facility Act and was therefore required to achieve CSA health care facility standards. There are specific ventilation plans to facilitate the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and for ceremonial purposes (smudging).
